The Local Government Institute of Wisconsin announced today it was starting a 9 month study of the likely scenarios that could play out for local governments over the next 20 years. As we know, recent demographic, economic and political trends are making it more difficult for local governments to operate in a way that is both fiscally sustainable and provides the expected level of services to residents.

The Local Government Institute is introducing a new program designed specifically for local government leaders, staff and elected officials interested in doing more with less. The Service Innovation Certificate Program rewards individuals interested in collaboration, innovation and best practice approaches to service provision with recognition, networking opportunities and additional support for implementing new ideas.

The Local Government Institute of Wisconsin, in partnership with University of Wisconsin - Extension's Local Government Center, hosted a leadership workshop designed for local government leaders on April 28, 2011. The workshop was broadcast to eleven different sites across the state, and approximately 200 people registered for the event. Attendees were a mix of municipal staff members and elected officials, and representatives from counties, towns, villages, and cities alike were at the workshop.

LGI maintains a directory of case studies of local government collaboration for service delivery. The directory contains case studies, sample agreements and other documents, training opportunities and lists of individuals willing to discuss their experience. The directory is focused on specific examples of local governments working together to reduce costs, improve services, or to better address regional issues.

In January 2009, Governor Doyle awarded 10 energy independence grants to 23 Wisconsin communities. The grants were used by the participating communities to prepare energy independence plans focused on energy and fuel usage in municipal buildings and fleets.
